User Registration
Sep 11, 2013
WordPress can allow viewers to create an account on your site.
The lowest level account is called “subscriber”. A subscriber account allows a person to have set a name, email, website, and gravitar to their account, and makes it easy for them to subscribe to updates that you make on your site.
You can alter the account settings by navigating to Admin –> Settings –> General from your dashboard. As you see below, if there’s no reason for people to be able to create accounts, you can turn off registrations by checking a box. Odds are, unless your site has a public membership role, the people who create accounts are really just spammers.
You can set different default user roles as well – although allowing higher level users would defiantly pose a risk, as other roles allow additional capabilities, like posting content, or changing site settings. More on user roles here.
